HD DVD or AOD (Advanced Optical Disc) offers increased capacity over its predecessor the Standard Definition DVD. A single disc will hold 15 GB with the dual layer disc holding 30 GB. Recently HD DVD backers have announced the development of a triple layer of storage. HD DVD resolution will follow the standard HD resolution standards currently used for HDTV transmissions. This means, at least for the present, the maximum output resolution will be 1080i. With an increasing number of households now viewing discs on HD televisions and displays and an increasing number of cable and satellite providers transmitting in the HD format the advantage of offering content on HD DVD is obvious. HD DVD will be backwards compatible with current DVD and CD technology.

Unlike BD, HD DVD currently has an approved audio specification scheme. The supported mandatory formats will be Dolby Digital Plus (DD+), DTS-HD, MLP 2-Channel, and DTS-HD Lossless (optional).

Existing DVD audio formats will still be supported by the above-approved formats.
